MLB rumors continue to fly every direction when you bring up the name Zack Greinke. This time, reports are surfacing saying the Milwaukee Brewers will NOT offer a contract extension to Zack Greinke. That tells me they’re going to try and trade Greinke by the deadline, and are trying to maintain his maximum value.
I’m a little surprised, but at the same time I’m not. Greinke knows he’s going to make more money on the open market, and the Brewers continue to play in a mid market. I’m not buying the whole “he wants to play in a small market” because of his anxiety issues. I think he’s been able to overcome them, and would be a blessing for any major market team.
If Zack Greinke gets traded, the Brewers are going to get some good talent back. I’m not sure what they’re really trying to accomplish, but if that’s the route they’re going to go, they need to make the move now. The longer they wait, the worse value they’re going to get.
I could see 7 different teams landing Greinke, so we’re going to have to see what happens.
I think this is truly a shame for the Brewers. They were VERY close to building an organization around CC Sabathia, Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, and Zack Greinke. It’s unfortunate that Milwaukee will never have the glamor Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or Miami will have. It’s also unfortunate they don’t have the capital the Tigers seem to have.
It’s time to build from within, and not extending Greinke could end up being a very good longterm move for the Brewers.
