The Detroit Tigers might need pitching more than any team in baseball. This is why I’m surprised that reports are starting to surface that they’ve pulled themselves out of all Zack Greinke trade talks. I know the Tigers need pitching and Zack Greinke is one of the best in the league, so it made some sense both teams would talk about this kid.
Clearly the Milwaukee Brewers wanted the world for Greinke, and I figured the Tigers would pull the trigger simply because they’ve dumped all this money into their offense and need an arm. It’s even more clear the Detroit Tigers do not want to mortgage their future to get Greinke, or were afraid he would be too expensive- or wouldn’t even sign a contract extension to stay in Detroit.
With the Tigers still in the race, I’m not ready to say they’re not going to make a move. There’s still a TON of pitching on the market, and I suspect they’ll try and take another shot at Chicago Cubs Right hander Matt Garza, up an offer for Cubs’ right hander Ryan Dempster, take a harder look at Francisco Liriano or Houston Astros left hander Wandy Rodriguez.
This team needs a second horse because Justin Verlander can’t throw every game in the postseason. Will they get one? We’ll find out as MLB Rumors continue to truck towards the MLB trade deadline.
