Chicago White Sox Interested In Yankees’ Prospect Dellin Betances?

Josh Norris, the beat writer for the New York Yankees‘  Double A affiliate Trenton Trenton Thunder tweeted that the Chicago White Sox are “zeroing in” on Yankees’ right hander Dellin Betances.  So that got me thinking about what White Sox GM Kenny Williams may be thinking.  The 24 year old Betances hasn’t been good this year with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and AA Trenton going 4-6 with a 5.98 ERA in 102.1 innings pitched.  He has a terrible 100/80 K/BB ratio.  Maybe the White Sox scouts see something in his delivery that they can fix.  The White Sox have been very good at getting struggling pitchers, changing something and getting them back on track.

Not sure what to make of this, but the White Sox have had a scout following Dellin Betances over his last three starts.

Heard from a source that #WhiteSox‬ are definitely “zeroing in” on #Yankees‬ Betances

Lets take a look at a few different options that Williams has in pursuing Betances.

First, he could be looking to deal Gavin Floyd for a package containing Betances and other prospects to help in a Zach Greinke trade proposal.  There were rumors that Williams was trying to do this same thing with the Toronto Blue Jays.  The only thing is, I don’t know that the Yankees have enough in prospects to get a Floyd deal done.  Remember, starting pitcher, especially ones that are controlled through next season, are very valuable at the moment.  Floyd has a very reasonable $9.5 million team option for 2013.  I really don’t think the Yankees would be willing to add in prospects such as Gary Sanchez, Mason Williams or Tyler Austin in a deal for Floyd.  Which the Sox would need someone like that to trade Floyd during the season where they are fighting for the AL Central title.

Second, he could just be looking to try and get him in a prospect for prospect swap.  Betances stock has taken a huge hit over this season. He is 24 and just got demoted to AA, because he was terrible in AAA, so maybe the Sox could trade a player similar to him and make a deal that way.

Either way, Kenny Williams always has something up his sleeve.  We only have to wait five more days to see what he will do before the trade deadline.
