Wandy Rodriguez to Make Pittsburgh Pirates Debut Tonight Against Former Team

After 7.5 seasons pitching for the Houston Astros, left-handed starter Wandy Rodriguez is set to make his debut for another team. As fate would have it, he’ll be starting for their division rival Pittsburgh Pirates against none other than his now former team. Wandy Rodriguez

The Pirates acquired Rodriguez on Tuesday for outfield prospect Robbie Grossman and left-handed pitching prospects Rudy Owens and Colton Cain.

Wandy is 46-35 with a 3.44 ERA in his career at Houston’s Minute Maid Park where he’ll pitch tonight. He went 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA overall in 21 games for the Astros this year.

Houston will send Armando Galarraga to the mound to face the Pirates. The club signed Galarraga on May 21 and promoted him from AAA to fill the spot in the rotation made by Rodriguez’s departure.

Last night, the Pirates scored twice in the ninth inning and defeated the Astros 6-5. They have now won eight straight against the Astros this season.

Starling Marte started in left field, batted lead off went 0 for 4 in his second Major League game, but he came up with the game-tying RBI sac fly in the ninth inning.

Drew Sutton pinch hit for short stop Clint Barmes in the ninth, drawing a walk and eventually scoring the go ahead run on a wild pitch reliever Rhiner Cruz.

Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan gave up a hit but struck out two and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his MLB-leading 31st save of the season.

Game time tonight is 7:05 PM.
