A big MLB rumor to surface today is the Arizona Diamondbacks are attempting to package Justin Upton for an elite pitcher, and it appears they could have a suitor in the Seattle Mariners. It is not 100 percent that Hernandez is the target, but if he is the Diamondbacks would have to package Justin Upton and a number of players to land the Mariners ace.
Hernandez is not the only pitcher linked to the D-Backs. They are also likely interested in Philadelphia Phillies ace Cliff Lee and Miami Marlins hurler Josh Johnson. If they are willing to trade a young stud like Upton, they should come away with an elite pitcher by day’s end. The trade deadline is 4 pm ET.
They must be trying to stay with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, who have been very active on today’s trade deadline. The Giants have apparently acquired Hunter Pence from the Phillies, and the Dodgers acquired Shane Victorino and Ryan Dempster to bolster their chances in the division.
The Dodgers and Giants sit tied for first in the division, with the D-Backs a close third at 3.5 games back. The trade deadline should prove to be a huge factor in determining the winner of that division.
By all accounts, the Giants and Dodgers have improved, and the D-Backs are clearly trying to stay up to speed. If they can land an ace, it would give them a solid top three to go along with Ian Kennedy and Trevor Cahill.
