MLB Trade Deadline: Arizona Diamondbacks Updates

We will be keeping track of all of the Arizona Diamondbacks rumors that are flying as the MLB trade deadline approaches. We’ll keep the newer stuff toward the top of the page, so if you want to see how things are evolving, all you have to do is scroll down.

(All times are in Mountain Standard Time)

11:20am: More denials that Justin Upton will be moved in a deal for Matt Garza. In addition, several sources now reporting that Patrick Corbin won’t be dealt unless something drastic changes, but with his scratch from his start tonight, they have to be at least relatively close on something.

In addition, the Diamondbacks are also interested in James Shields, according to sources cited by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. That would definitely be a trade worth considering, and the D’Backs may include Corbin in a deal like that.

11:00am: With two hours until the deadline, reports coming out that Patrick Corbin has been scratched from his start today with the Reno Aces. He could very well be a piece in a potential deadline deal, and it could signal that the Diamondbacks are comfortable with their other pitching prospects like Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs. Stay tuned.

10:45am: First update of the day for this bad boy, and there are definitely some things to share. Various reports are coming out about the team pursuing a massive upgrade to their pitching staff, and that’s what the team’s ownership group is discussing in a closed door meeting as we speak.

One guy that they may potentially be targeting is Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza, who has been rumored to be on the trading block for months now. In the alleged deal, as reported by ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Diamondbacks would send OF Justin Upton to the north side of Chicago, but several sources are saying that this deal has never been discussed.

If the Diamondbacks are indeed floating Upton, another team that may be interested is the Philadelphia Phillies, who just traded Shane Victorino to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Hunter Pence to the San Francisco Giants. With the other two teams in the NL West race getting that much stronger, the Diamondbacks could be looking to make a splash, and dealing Upton to the Phillies could land them the services of Cliff Lee, who was rumored to be on the Texas Rangers‘ radar earlier this week, among other teams.

Kevin Towers is going to feel compelled to act based on the acquisitions of the Dodgers (who also got Brandon League in a trade with Seattle to bolster their bullpen) and the Giants, but no one can be sure if that desperation would be strong enough to trade away his star outfielder for what would likely be less value than he could get than he would during the offseason.
