The Ryan Dempster drama is almost over, saying he would agree to a trade with the New York Yankees. Apparently, Dempster – who previously stated he wanted to stay in the National League – has caved in under constant trade scrutiny by accepting a deal to New York. He will be reunited with his former pitching coach, Larry Rothschild, and general manager, Jim Hendry, who is an assistant with the Yankees’ organization.
Ryan Dempster has taken a Dwight Howard like approach with his 10/5 rights. Saying he would accept a trade to the Atlanta Braves before vetoing it, causing mass hysteria on the northside of Chicago. While Dempster on the Yankees seems like a good fit on paper, I have to wonder how successful Ryan Dempster will be in the American League, especially in a park like Yankee Stadium.
To put it simply, Ryan Dempster is a ticking timebomb of regression. His insanely low .242 BABIP and 84.0 LOB% tells me Dempster is due for a 6.50 ERA month, which is why I wouldn’t trade anything of value for the rental. The one thing that Dempster has improved on is his BB/9, but other than that, he’s basically the same pitcher that had ERAs in the high threes.
Considering the Yankees are using Freddy Garcia as their fifth starter is enough reason for the Yankees to have interest in Dempster, but I still have my doubts about him the rest of the season
If – and when- this becomes official, I will be back to update. Apparently, Dempster has added the Texas Rangers to his list as well. So stay tuned!
