The Milwaukee Brewers are coming off yet another painful sweep, this time at the hands of divisional rival St. Louis Cardinals. If Milwaukee is not careful, it could turn into back-to-back sweeps, as they will be facing the National League Central division leading Cincinnati Reds.
The headline coming into Monday night’s game is that shortstop Jean Segura, one of three prospects Milwaukee acquired from the Los Angeles Angels when they traded Zack Greinke, will be making his first start with the Brewers after being called up earlier today from Class AA Huntsville. This will be Segura’s second major league start as he did play one game for the Angels. He went 0-for-3 at the plate with two strikeouts but did have a successful outing in the field as he had five assists and one putout in six total chances.
The following is the Brewers lineup against Bronson Arroyo and the Reds:
Right Field: Norichika Aoki
Center Field: Carlos Gomez
Left Field: Ryan Braun
Third Base: Aramis Ramirez
First Base: Corey Hart
Second Base: Rickie Weeks
Catcher: Martin Maldonado
Shortstop: Jean Segura
Pitcher: Yovani Gallardo
Besides Segura, the only other notable difference from last night’s lineup is that Martin Maldonado will catch in place of Jonathan Lucroy. Manager Ron Roenicke still does not feel comfortable playing Lucroy every game as he still needs to get back into catcher shape after missing several weeks on the disabled list. It is also important to keep Maldonado active as much as possible so he does not lose a step.
The Brewers were only able to muster six hits last night and have historically struggled against Arroyo so it should make for an interesting evening. In three chances against Arroyo this season, Milwaukee has scored six runs on 14 hits and lost all three games. The good news is the Brewers will be sending Yovani Gallardo to the mound, which should give Milwaukee the edge they need to win.
