Despite a seven inning start from Jeff Karstens, the Pirates used eight different pitchers in last night’s contest, including starters Kevin Correia and Wandy Rodriguez, who was scheduled to start tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Rodriguez pitched the final two innings for the Pirates, giving up just one hit, a walk and no runs while striking out three en route to earning the win.
Pedro Alvarez‘ only hit in six at bats on the night was a solo home run in the 19th inning that proved to be the game-winner. Andrew McCutchen added two more insurance runs in the half-inning and the Pirates finished 6-3 victors.
Tonight, the team travels to Petco Park in San Diego. Interestingly, Correia will start the game for the Bucs despite pitching two innings last night.
The team called up pitchers Justin Wilson and Kyle McPherson from AAA Indianapolis as some fresh arms for a bullpen that will surely be needed with a relatively tired pitcher taking the mound.
The Pirates then designated Juan Cruz for assignment and put short stop Jordy Mercer on paternity leave to make room for the call ups.
While outfielder Travis Snider tweaked his groin last night, it looks like the team may be trying to avoid a disabled list stint for him. Then again, he could be placed on the DL tomorrow when the Pirates are expected to bring Chad Qualls back from the bereavement list.
I’m sure we’ll see the major league debut of either or both Wilson and McPherson tonight.
Edinson Volquez goes for San Diego. The Pirates last saw him 10 days ago at PNC Park where he allowed six runs in 3.1 innings of a 9-8 Padres victory.
Game time is 10:05 PM.
