The San Diego Padres have one of the best farm systems in all of baseball, and MLB Rumors are now flying that Edinson Volquez could be traded to not only make room for some of the kids coming in, but to improve the system even more. I’m not sure I like this trade theory because I think Volquez is a good guy to have as a 3 or 4 in the rotation. I don’t think he’s going to cost as much as everyone thinks, but at the same time, you have to pay up to keep an important piece to the team.
The Padres traded for Volquez when they sent Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds, but Volquez has been very up and down this year. In fact, he’s been up and down since the return from Tommy John surgery. Look, that happens from time to time. I think Volquez is incredibly inconsistent in his mechanics and doesn’t trust his arm yet. It takes time and I think it would be a mistake to give up on him already.
I’m sure the Padres could get decent value for him, but how many teams are going to pay up, knowing that the Padres just want to rid themselves of this guy?
However, with the Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants all needing a starter, it wouldn’t be shocking to me if the Padres traded Volquez before Aug. 31 or this winter.
We’ll see what happens, but I don’t think this would be a good move for the Padres unless they’re getting a ridiculous package back.
