With a huge four game series starting tonight against the New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles are relevant again for the first time in 14 seasons. Yes, it is September. Yes, the Orioles are in the middle of a pennant chase. Yes, the Orioles and Yankees rivalry is back.
It’s September and the Yankees and Orioles are battling it out for first place in the AL East. Although I feel most Orioles fans enjoy watching the Yankees lose, would you want the Orioles battling it out with any other team? There is something about the Yankees rivalry that makes the Orioles rise back to relevance that much sweeter. It just wouldn’t be the same if the Orioles were facing off against the Toronto Blue Jays for first place.
Even though the Orioles haven’t had a meaninful series with the Yankees (for both teams) in September since 1997, I think there is still enough history between the two teams to start back up where they left off. Where did these two teams leave off you ask?
Some may remember before the Yankees, Boston Red Sox rivalry that has dominated ESPN and the rest of baseball’s attention the last decade, the Orioles and Yankees had some memorable showdowns. Don’t believe me? Check out the video of the Yankees, Orioles brawl that took place in May of 1998. Watch the video below and tell me the Yankees vs. Orioles wasn’t a heated rivalry. I actually forgot that the brawl took place in May. By the looks of it you would of thought they were playing game 7 of the AL Championship Series.
The truth is, when the Orioles were at the top of the AL East alongside the Yankees in the mid 90s, it was an amazing rivalry. There was drama, bad blood, brawls, and suspense. Only time will tell if the Orioles can rise back up to the top of the AL East for good. If they can, expect this four game series to be the beginning of a beautiful rivalry.
