The Cincinnati Reds are on their way to clinching the Central Division this last month of the season. It has been one of the best seasons in the last 20 years for the Reds. One member of the team that hasn’t had the opportunity to contribute to the wins is reliever Nick Masset. Masset went down during spring training with soreness in his shoulder. He never returned to the Reds all season. Now it appears that MLB Rumors has Masset out for the duration.
It was hoped that Masset would be able to return to the Reds for the stretch run. He did quite a bit of work in AAA ball, but was never able to feel well enough to make the official trip to Cincinnati. Now with the recent MRI showing inflamation, there is little doubt with MLB Rumors that Masset is out for the season.
The only comments so far from the Reds’ organization was from head Trainer, Paul Lessard, “We’re treating the symptoms. He has some generalized soreness. It’s not one specific spot.”
The Reds could cerainly have used the righthander. He’s been with the Reds since 2009 and has a 12-11 record during that time. Last year he was 3-6 with a 3.71 ERA as he appeared in 75 games. The Reds were counting on him to be a big contributer in the bullpen this season, especially when their newly signed closer, Ryan Madson, was lost for the year due to Tommy John surgery.
That sent manager Dusty Baker scrambling to find a closer. Couple that with the problems that Bill Bray had beginning the season and the Reds were in a pickle. That is one of the reasons the Reds picked up Jonathan Broxton at the trade deadline.
As of now, it appears the Reds will have to go without Masset.
