The 2012 MLB postseason is officially upon us and now it is time to take at a look at the American League side of the tournament and see which teams can advance to the ALCS and then ultimately which one can go all the way to the World Series.
Wild Card Game:
The American League Wild Card Game will featured two teams that at the beginning of the season no one would have predicted that they would competing in it; the Texas Rangers (expected to win the AL West) and the Baltimore Orioles (expected to finish fourth in the AL East). These two teams are going in completely opposite directions as the Orioles had to fight to get to this point over the last two weeks or so while the Rangers fell into this spot over the same time period. Even though rookie sensation Yu Darvish is pitching for Texas I like the Orioles to pull off the upset, 4-3 and advance to the ALDS.
In the ALDS match up that is already set in stone the AL Central Champion Detroit Tigers will square off versus the surprise AL West Champion Oakland A’s. This series should be a good one as baseball’s ultimate individual hitter, 2012 AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera looks to continuing hitting the cowhide cover off of every baseball against an A’s pitching staff that has been mixed and matched together. Even though it seems as if the Tigers have a huge advantage in this series I like the A’s, there is something magical going on in Oakland right now. The Athletics take the series in five game, 3-2.
In the second ALDS match up between the New York Yankees and Orioles (I predict) will continue their steel cage match that they have been involved in for the past month and a half with the opportunity to reach the ALCS on the line. In this series it will be the vets who have been there and done that versus the new kids on the block who want to prove that they are more than just happy to be here. I think the best thing that could have happened to the Yankees this season is the Orioles challenging them for the AL East title, it seemed to have awoken this team. New York is playing their best ball of the season and I fully expect them to defeat this young and hungry Baltimore team in four games 3-1.
In this ALCS match up that I am predicting it will be the Yankees and the A’s going to battle for the opportunity to represent the American League in the World Series. The Yankees seem to have every advantage on paper in this series but the A’s have something that you can’t judge on paper which is heart. This team is one of the most resilient teams I have seen in my years, they will bring it each and every game of this series. I fully believe however that this series will be Robinson Cano’s coming out party and those who don’t know him will because he will hit over .400 in the series and lead the Yanks to their 41st World Series in franchise history. I like New York to win the series 4-2.
Here are my NL Playoff Predictions.
