MLB Rumors: Tampa Bay Rays Interested In David Ortiz?

Bob DeChiara-US PRESSWIRE

The Tampa Bay Rays NEED some offense. There’s no if ands or buts about that. With that said, the Rays rarely spend money so it’s going to be tough for them to make a run at anyone at all right? Well- I think this is the offseason that could be different. MLB Rumors season is about to heat up, and the Rays missed the playoffs this year. They missed because they weren’t able to score as many runs as other teams. Sure, they lost Evan Longoria for a huge chunk of the year and that obviously hurts. What killed them? They didn’t have anyone to step in. That all could change this offseason as I believe David Ortiz could be  a real option for this team if they want to bring the power they need to the organization.

Ortiz is a free agent and I question if he WANTS to resign with the Boston Red Sox. They’ve jerked him around quite a bit over the last few years and I think Ortiz is going to look for a multi year deal. He knows the AL best and he has to sign with an AL team since he’s nothing more than a DH (obviously) so wouldn’t it make sense if he went to Tampa?

I think that if the Rays actually signed Ortiz, they would be a strong playoff contender for the next few years. Ortiz would provide the protection Longoria needs and the pop the middle needs (especially from the left side). Frankly, I would just love to see the Rays take a shot and spend a little money because I’m not sure their window is that big.

We’ll see what happens, but this makes all the sense in the world and hopefully the Rays kick the tires.
