MLB Rumors: Will the New York Mets Will Be Buyers in the Offseason?
Throughout this winter, the New York Mets will be involved with almost every rumor and innuendo about the direction they want to go with their team. So what separates the fact from the fiction and what fans themselves should pay attention to while hoping that Sandy Alderson can suddenly convince the Wilpons to spend on improvement? This answer is relatively easy. That is why it is a rumor.
Alderson made it very clear that the Mets will look to have about a $90M payroll for the 2013 MLB season. That means there is not much left for them after almost $60M is paid to Johan Santana, Jason Bay and Frank Francisco. Then there is the issue of paying both David Wright and R.A. Dickey which will probably cost about $25-30M. So where are you going to find the fixes that are needed in the outfield and behind the plate? You’re not.
My suggestion is to keep Kelly Shoppach and Josh Thole for a full year together since Alderson will not want to pay for Russell Martin and the other catchers available are comparable to what Shoppach has been. The next option is to trade a starting pitcher in order to bring back an outfielder that is major league ready and hopefully has right handed power.
The final option is to try for another outfielder via trade by dangling some other up and coming arms such as Robert Carson, Jennry Mejia, and/or Jeurys Familia. The Mets do not have many options, but if they actually do get lucky by signing Wright and Dickey, clearly the cash will be locked up until 2014 when Santana and Bay can be taken off payroll.
So as you listen to these rumors and talk of getting this player or that player, be realistic about the situation. Do not fall into the trap of believing that 2013 will be any different from 2012 because the numbers will simply not add up. Trade is the only option for the Mets and that means they will be looking to part with one or more of the only players that will get them quality return: Wright, Ike Davis, Dickey, Jonathan Niese, Lucas Duda, Dillon Gee, Familia or Mejia. The question is, are you willing to part with them as a fan?
