New York Yankees GM: Alex Rodriguez ‘no longer a superstar’

The General Manager of the New York Yankees Brian Cashman recently told a New York area radio station that Alex Rodriguez was ‘no longer a superstar’. This raises an immediate and important question: has Cashman actually been watching Rodriguez in the past few years? Rodriguez has not been a superstar for a long time now; he is a petulant, arrogant cheat who has been coasting on his ill-got gains and reputation for years.

Rodriguez has come under fire for his performance in this postseason, but the Yankees actually made it to the ALCS this year. Last October Rodriguez was just as bad and struck out twice in the late innings of the Yankees’ Game Five defeat to the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS. Rodriguez has only performed well once in the postseason and that was in 2009 when the Yankees won the World Series. This sort of performance is nothing new at all, the only thing different is that people are finally starting to notice.

But that of course is just the postseason. Rodriguez has been mediocre in the regular season as well. There was a time when he put up very good numbers, but he has admitted that he was using steroids during that time. It is completely irrelevant to look at Rodriguez’s career numbers because he cheated to achieve them. And in the last few years when he was not cheating, or at least does not appear to have been cheating, he has been distinctly average. He hit only .272 this year with only 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. Last year he hit .276 with 16 home runs and he has not led the league in any category since 2008.

The fact is that Rodriguez has been getting by for years now on his undeserved and ill-got reputation and if it has taken Cashman until now to realise that Rodriguez is not (and has never legitimately been) a superstar then he is not fit to be a GM. Still, hopefully this leads to more people actually paying attention to facts rather than the hype common in the national media.
