MLB Rumors: Will Melky Cabrera Get a Bigger Contract Than Previously Expected in Wake of Bartolo Colon Deal?

Most MLB rumors surrounding free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera thus far have focused on what teams might offer him a one-year, make-good deal after missing the last 50 games of the 2012 season due to his suspension for testing positive for PEDs.

However, Bartolo Colon, who was also suspended for PED use and will miss the first four games of next season, just inked a 1-year, $3 million deal with the Oakland Athletics.  That could be very good news for Cabrera.

Colon was good for the A’s last season, posting a 3.43 ERA and 10-9 mark, but his contract is a little surprising considering he will be 40 in May.

Cabrera, meanwhile, was named the All-Star Game MVP and was having the finest season of his career.  Cabrera was hitting .346 with 11 home runs and 10 triples and was the San Francisco Giants best hitter.  He is also 28 and won’t turn 29 until August, plays a corner outfield spot adequately, and is one of the younger free agents that could possibly make an impact in this thin free agent class.

Cabrera might get only a one-year deal but there is a chance it could be for a lot more money than Colon received.  Seeing Colon sign his deal had to make Melky smile.

With the quality of free agent outfielders dropping off significantly after Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn, B.J. Upton, and Nick Swisher, Cabrera could be in for a significant payday.  I wouldn’t be shocked to see Cabrera ink a deal worth at least $8-10 million and there is a chance Cabrera could even get a multi-year deal.  Either way, Cabrera should probably send Colon and the A’s a thank you card.
