MLB Rumors: Should The Cubs Trade For Justin Upton?

With Justin Upton on the trade block, I would imagine every team is going to call the Arizona Diamondbacks this winter. I further think Upton will be one of the biggest names for all MLB Rumors over the next several weeks so things will probably start picking up very soon. The Chicago Cubs are one of those teams that frankly- I have no idea what they’re planning to do this winter. They attempted to trade for Dan Haren and that fell through so are they planning to still trade Carlos Marmol? Are they trying to sign a few starters now? Are they looking for a power bat on the open market via trade or free agency?

Look- my stance on the Cubs is that they need to act like a big market team. They have the revenue patterns to justify spending some money this year while letting kids like Javier Baez, Albert Almora, and Jorge Soler develop. Throw in another top-5 pick next June and the Cubs will continue building a good system. So why not try and win now while allowing that to happen? The Cubs NEED a power bat that can hit in the middle of the order and protect guys like Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo. I’ve been an advocate of signing Josh Hamilton, but if you can get a guy like Justin Upton without giving up one of your 3 cornerstone prospects- I think it’s something the Cubs certainly need to think about.

I don’t know if this is the route is going. I think the Cubs will surprise people this winter, but I’m not sure they’re going to make a blockbuster trade, even though they should.

I don’t think the Diamondbacks will give up Upton without getting one of the 3 guys (Baez, Almora, Soler) in return, but again- if Theo can pull it off without those guys in there…I say pull the trigger and stick Upton in the middle of the order.

The Cubs would definitely be better offensively- that’s for sure.
