MLB Rumors: Andy Pettitte Decision Coming Soon?
MLB rumors are starting to circulate around Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees about a decision being made on whether or not Pettitte will return to pitch in 2013. Last season, you will remember, Pettitte didn’t make his decision until Spring Training was almost over. This time, Pettitte could make his decision by the end of this week.
After the season, Pettitte indicated that he would like to return to pitch in 2013 and the Yankees are hoping that is the case as right now C.C. Sabathia is the only top of the rotation starter under contract. The Yankees also have Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova, David Phelps, and a rehabbing Michael Pineda. Hiroki Kuroda is currently a free agent but the Yankees are reportedly only offering a one-year deal and Kuroda is apparently getting interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels.
If Pettitte decides to retire, the Yankees will be left with a giant hole in their rotation that will need to be filled. The free agent market doesn’t offer much help as the Yankees are still committed to getting under the $189 million luxury tax threshold for 2014 so a big deal for a free agent is unlikely.
Pettitte had an excellent year last year before being derailed by a broken ankle. He posted a 5-4 record, 2.87 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He was just as effective in the postseason, pitching to a 3.29 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
It is clear that Pettitte is still a capable starter. It is doubtful he will be as effective as he was last season but he should be able to at least stay along his career lines of 3.86 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. The Yankees can’t afford to lose Pettitte and Kuroda this off-season but hopefully this week the Yankees get some good news when Pettitte makes his decision.
