MLB Rumors: Will New York Mets Pursue a Trade with Detroit Tigers for Brennan Boesch?

Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE

There might be some more MLB rumors coming from the Detroit Tigers camp after the Tigers signed Torii Hunter last week to replace Delmon Young.  However, the Tigers still have Andy Dirks, Brennan Boesch, and Ryan Rayburn on the roster and only one other spot for those three.  That could mean the Tigers could trade one of those extra outfielders.

Andy Dirks is still under team control and given the contracts the Tigers have passed out in the last couple of years, they are likely to hold onto Dirks who is still pre-arbitration eligible.  Dirks, however, could bring the most back in a trade but the most likely to go is the talented but underachieving Boesch.

Boesch, who will turn 28 in April, seemed to regress this year after he was expected to make his breakthrough with Prince Fielder added to the lineup.  Boesch went from hitting .283 with 16 homers and 54 RBI in 115 games to hitting .240 with 12 homers and 54 RBI in 132 games.

Boesch would still likely bring in some useful prospects for the Tigers, although not as much as Dirks would.  The hardest part might be finding a trade partner.

There are some teams that would be interested in a young corner outfielder who still has the potential to improve.  The New York Mets would make an interesting trade partner.

The Mets outfield currently consists of Lucas Duda, Angel Torres, and Mike Baxter.  It also looks like Scott Hairston, who hit 20 home runs for the Mets last year is going to receive a larger contract elsewhere.  Jason Bay is also gone after being a huge disappointment as a free agent signing a couple of years ago.

Boesch would be an upgrade over Duda or Baxter and shouldn’t cost a lot in return.  The Mets need to add some offense this offseason and they don’t figure to be major players in free agency.  Beosch still is young enough to have some upside and he could be a fairly decent gap hitter in Citi Field.  While I don’t expect Mets GM Sandy Alderson to be that aggressive this off-season, this trade does make sense for the Mets and, depending on what the Tigers get in return, could make sense for them too.
