The Kansas City Royals made it known a few days ago that the team will be willing to trade top prospect Wil Myers in order to acquire a front line starting pitcher. The Royals have already acquired Ervin Santana and brought back Jeremy Guthrie to add to the team’s 2013 rotation. However, Myers has already attracted the Boston Red Sox and a big deal with Boston could be happening soon.
The Royals and the Red Sox have been in talks in a trade that could send Myers to Boston for Jon Lester. The Royals’ philosophy is to trade prospects away rather than anybody at the Major League level right now and if they do acquire Lester, the team would have to part ways with the players on the team that have large contracts.
Kansas City would have to take a look at possibly moving Bruce Chen, Luke Hochevar or Felipe Paulino if a deal with Boston occurs. Chen will be owed $4.5 million in 2013 while Hochevar and Paulino are due to receive raises in salary arbitration.
Myers has been one of the best prospects in the Royals organization. He is in the same crop with Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas. Myers batted .304/378/.554 with 24 home runs in 2012 with Triple-A Omaha. If Myers were to leave, the Royals would have to rely on Jeff Francoeur in right field.
Francoeur did not have a good season with the Royals batting only .235 in 148 games with the team last season. The organization would have to rely on a bounce-back year from him if they trade Myers.
