Winter Meetings 2012: Could The New York Yankees Look At Kevin Youkilis?
The New York Yankees did not receive good news waking up Monday morning on the first day of the MLB Winter Meetings. The team learned that Alex Rodriguez will be out 4-6 weeks recovering from hip surgery that he needs. Rodriguez’s surgery will be on the other side of his previously hurt hip, which could prevent him from making an appearance at all in 2013 for the Yankees.
With that being said, the Yankees should start shopping for a third baseman for the time being in case Rodriguez does not make it back in time for April or even May. The team should take a look at Kevin Youkilis who is one of the best third baseman free agents in the market this season.
Youkilis has only played with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox in his career with a majority of the time playing in a Boston uniform and killing the Yankees at the plate. It is time for the Evil Empire to convert Youkilis to the “darkside” and make him the starting third baseman for the 2013 season.
However, the only thing holding the Yankees back from this possible deal is Youkilis’ knees. Youkilis could be in the market for a potential move to first base after splitting the season at both positions.
In short, the Yankees will need a third baseman and if the team does not want to bring back Eric Chavez, Youkilis should be the option to go to.
In 122 games last season, Youkilis batted /.235/.336/.409 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI.
