The biggest free agent this offseason in Major League Baseball is Josh Hamilton. There are going to be teams that will throw huge money at Hamilton to get him to their team. There is always a mystery team out there that people aren’t talking about in every negotiation. I’m going to throw a team out there now that may come in at the end and scoop Hamilton up in the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays have just lost B.J. Upton in free agency and could stick Hamilton in left field while having Desmond Jennings patrol center field. Tampa Bay has the pitching to contend with anyone and if you partner Hamilton with Evan Longoria in the middle of that lineup along with Tampa’s pitching staff, there may not be a team that stops the Rays in the American League East or even the whole American League.
I know that Tampa has had trouble attracting fans to their ballpark but is it possible now with the way that the Miami Marlins tore their team apart that the Rays now get some of those Marlins fans to come up to Tampa Bay to see their product. There is really only one good way to find out if that is possible and that is making a huge free agent splash and signing Hamilton would definitely do that. It would be a huge risk to give Hamilton $160 million over six or seven years with the young core that Tampa Bay has but it may allow the Rays to build a dynasty for years to come.
