The St. Louis Cardinals are definitely in need of a long term shortstop and they have a habit of finding diamonds in the rough all over the place. Our sources at the winter meetings confirm Dee Gordon is indeed available and it might not cost a team as much to get him after the terrible year Gordon had last year. If the Dodgers really believe Hanley Ramirez is a shortstop long term, this deal could certainly gain steam over the next few days.
The St. Louis Cardinals will continue to be in the running at winning the NL Central. However, they do need to start thinking about a short stop. I think Dee Gordon is a really low risk/high reward kind of player for them as he’ll be able to learn in a smaller market. Just because he had a bad year last year doesn’t mean he’s going to have a bad career as he still is incredibly talented. Throw in the fact he’s as fast as lightning–good things can happen.
Considering the fact the Cardinals have a knack at developing players like this? I think it’s a perfect fit.
We’ll see what happens over the next few days, but the Cardinals could strike gold here if they so choose.
