Winter Meetings 2012: Baltimore Orioles Are Officially Out on Josh Hamilton

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

That didn’t last long. Even though the Baltimore Orioles were reportedly very interested in slugging outfielder Josh Hamilton, they have officially taken themselves out of the running. I would imagine it’s because of the years Hamilton wanted and not about the overall dollars. Hamilton has had well-known issues and it’s hard for a team to turn around and give him six tonine years when his body has broken down a little bit already.

With that being said, I love what the Orioles are doing. They’re saying “hey, we were a postseason team last year, let’s get better and see if we can win a World Series.” Even though Hamilton didn’t work out, they’re going to continue looking for ways to get better and add bats that can produce runs. This is a team that won 93 games in 2012 and are a couple of pieces away from being long term serious contenders. The Orioles have been rumored around most of the big name free agents, so you have to like they are at least attempting to improve.

We’ll see what they do for the rest of the off-season, but I fully expect the Baltimore Orioles to make some moves offensively this week.
