The San Diego Padres weren’t expected to be in on the best free agents of this winter, and I think that will still be the case. That doesn’t mean the Padres won’t look to get deeper within their rotation, however. The Padres are reportedly very close to a one year deal with Jason Marquis, and the deal could be completed later today.
You might look at this and say meh, who cares. However, the San Diego Padres could be one of the more dangerous teams over the next year or two, as their number one rated farm system will hopefully start to bear the fruit their fans are so desperately craving. Jason Marquis should be able to bridge the gap and be a good mentor for the younger guys on the team. Marquis has been around for a long time, has been to the postseason and if he throws strikes- he’s typically extremely effective. Mixing him in with that ridiculously monster stadium in San Diego? I think he’ll be just fine as a 5th starter.
Marquis is coming off a broken hand when he was struck by a Pedro Alvarez line drive in late August. The Padres will certainly put him through the ringer to ensure that there are no complications from that injury.
We’ll see if this deal gets done and we’ll continue to update you on all that takes place at the 2012 Winter Meetings, happening right now in Nashville, Tennessee. As always, stay tuned for all of the latest updates from the Winter Meetings.
