Winter Meetings 2012: New York Mets Taking Aim At Wil Myers

The New York Mets are actively shopping 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey instead of signing him to a long year deal. The Mets are talking to the Kansas City Royals about possibly making a deal for Royals top prospect Wil Myers. The Royals are not only looking at the 38-year-old junk baller Dickey, but Kansas City could also be looking at Jonathan Niese in a deal.

The Mets have been shopping Dickey, but the consensus around the franchise has been that the team will retain him. However, if Myers does become an asset that the Mets value, the team could make a respectable deal. The Mets will not go the Carlos Beltran-route in trading Dickey for one prospect, but the team will continue to aim high.

As for the Royals, Myers has been a big part of trade talks throughout the past week. Myers was being shopped around and the Boston Red Sox were a potential biter, but nothing has been talked about since then. The Mets have been the latest nibblers in the Myers’ bait.

New York does not have the money to extend him since they chose to extend David Wright. The team would rather trade him to a team and get multiple prospects back because whichever team that gets him would have a better chance than the Mets to re-sign him.

Dickey was 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA with 230 strikeouts.
