Winter Meetings 2012: Chicago White Sox Interested In Jack Hannahan
Even after signing Jeff Keppinger the Chicago White Sox are still interested in Jack Hannahan. Sources have said that they are a top suitor for Hannahan. In fact Hannahan already has a contract offer from a team in the AL Central. It isn’t known if the White Sox offered him the contract.
The White Sox are competing with the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, and the Minnesota Twins for his services. Hannahan’s old team the Cleveland Indians wanted him to stay but Hannahan wants to be a starter somewhere. With the Indians he can’t do that.
Hannahan is known more for his defense then his hitting. In his six years in the MLB he is a career .234 hitter. His best year was in 2011 when he hit .250. In 2012 he hit .244 with four home runs and 29 RBI’s in 105 games. Not very impressive numbers if you only look at his offense.
However, defensively he is very good. Hannahan can play any position in the infield. Being a utility player only adds to his value for the White Sox. Hannahan is a natural third baseman though. In his career at third base Hannahan has a .968 fielding percentage.
In 2011 he was first in the American League in fielding percentage at third base with a .983 fielding percentage. In 2012 Hannahan was the top third baseman in the American League in terms of range factor.
At 32, I would think that Hannahan would be looking for a possible two year contract. That would fit in the plans for the White Sox. The White Sox are still interested in Hannahan since he is a utility player and can play third base, shortstop and could start at second base if they needed him to.
Time will tell but the White Sox seem to be in the mix to sign Hannahan.
