In the third day of the MLB Winter Meetings, the rumors are starting to heat up as Nick Swisher is starting to gain interest. The Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners are all in pursuit of the free agent outfielder.
For the Red Sox to get Swisher, the consensus is that they would probably have to ship Jacoby Ellsbury after the team signed Shane Victorino to a three-year deal on Tuesday. Boston is expected to listen to offers for Ellsbury, but there have not been substantial talks about a trade for him just yet.
Swisher’s top team is the Giants because he would love to play in San Francisco. However, the Giants have spent a decent amount of money already on Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro and could sign a low-cost platoon at the left field position instead of trying to pay Swisher about $15 million per year.
The Orioles could be out on Swisher after agreeing to a deal with Nate McLouth earlier Wednesday. The Orioles were also in on Josh Hamilton for a while and could throw a lot of money at him.
The Indians and Mariners seem to be the best destinations for Swisher right now. The Indians are looking for an outfielder after losing out on Victorino to Boston. The Mariners seem to be in on all of the top outfielder free agents this season, so they have a chance to land anyone.
