Kansas City Royals Make Mistake Trading Wil Myers

I’m no longer going to feel sorry for the Kansas City Royals. The Tampa Bay Rays made out like bandits in a trade with the Royals that sent James Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals for top prospect Wil Myers and three other prospects. I just don’t feel sorry for the Royals or their fans anymore after this trade.

I understand that the Royals needed pitching and that they needed it badly, but how can a team such as the Royals trade their top prospect? A prospect that they groomed and is rated one of the best prospects in all of baseball.

In the past I have felt bad for the Royals. The Royals haven’t had a winning season since 2003. There have been injuries, a few prospects didn’t pan out, and free agent signings that didn’t work out as well.

I have always thought that the Royals would eventually be a good team who could compete for the AL Central. They have a good farm system and then they got Myers. A player who most teams salivate over and the Royals had him. They kept working with him, and grooming him, making him one of the best players in the minor leagues. Then they subsequently trade him.

With the trade of Myers the Royals did something that has never happened in baseball. Myers was Baseball America’s minor league baseball player of the year. The award has been given out for the last 32 years. How many players that won the award were traded before they suited up for the team that developed them? Zero, that’s right zero. So congratulations Royals you are now in the history books for the wrong reason.

Lost in the trade are the prospects that were traded with Myers. Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery, and Patrick Leonard are three other players that are very good prospects. So not only did the Royals trade the best prospect in baseball, they subsequently traded three other potential all stars.

In the short term it is possible that the Royals will be good with Shields and Davis. Like I said they need pitching since the Royals have had the hitting. Yet if or when the Royals falter later on don’t feel sorry for them. They did it to themselves.
