New York Mets Make Blockbuster Trade With Oakland A's?

Well, I know that the title might have been a bit misleading, but for the New York Mets to acquire any MLB outfielder at this point is a blessing.  Today, the Mets sent minor league infielder Jeffrey Marte to the Oakland A’s for outfielder Collin Cowgill.  That’s right, THE Collin Cowgill.

What? You never heard of him? Well, that would make two of us.  Cowgill is a 26 year old who played in only 38 games last year  batting .269 with 2 doubles, 1HR and 9RBI.  Just what the doctor ordered for this Mets team that is in dire need of a right-handed hitting outfielder with power.

But he came on the cheap and hopefully he will be able to at least provide some defensive attributes since he won’t be providing the offensive power Manager Terry Collins could have used.  The A’s receive Marte, who is an average fielder with not much pop in his bat either, but he is only 21 years old and can be groomed.

At this point, it is imperative that the Mets continue talks with Scott Hairston, because with him, at least they have the possibility of driving in runs and hitting homers.  An outfield that consists of Lucas Duda, Kirk Neuwenhuis, Mike Baxter, Jordanny Valdespin and Cowgill will not put fear in any opponent.  GM Sandy Alderson is good for one blockbuster trade a year, and that was the coup that sent R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays for top catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud, RHP prospect Noah Syndergaard, C John Buck and OF prospect Wuilmer Becerra.

For now, there is plenty of time between now and spring training, and Mets fans must be patient through at least 2013.  Until Alderson gets more flexibility when Johan Santana and Jason Bay are fully off the books, he will not be able to make a huge splash monetarily.  But at this moment, at least he is bringing in some type of help to challenge for a starting spot.  Let’s just hope that Cowgill is not the Mets version of the savior, because he clearly will fall short of that designation.
