There are still uncertainties in left field for the Atlanta Braves as we wait to see if it will be Martin Prado or someone else or even an interesting platoon that works that side of the outfield. However that doesn’t mean that the outfield as a whole is uncertain. Actually with the acquisition of B.J. Upton to accompany Jason Heyward, the outfield is looking as strong as it has looked in a while.
Heyward just keeps getting better as he gets more experience. He is leaner without losing any power and able to play gold glove quality defense in right field. There is no certainty of course but look for Heyward to have a banner year this year. It could be a big breakout season as he could be one of many young veterans to step up into a more leadership role.
B.J. Upton hasn’t had the greatest offensive seasons for the last couple of years but his defense is still gold glove caliber and the offense he does produce usually includes some time for clutch work. The trip to Atlanta will probably bring with it an increase in offensive output for Upton since he will be in a city he seems to love. As he approaches his big time prime years Upton will produce as good as or maybe even better than he ever has.
This combo of Heyward in right and Upton in center unfortunately cannot cover all three outfield positions. What they can do is take almost all of the pressure off of the still uncertain left field spot offensively. If they can both have breakout years, the Braves might have a breakout year themselves offensively.
