Milwaukee Brewers’ Jean Segura Will Prove to be Sensational Offensive Shortstop

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura has the potential to be an outstanding offensive player after his recent accomplishment in the Dominican Winter League.

Segura won the Dominican Winter League batting title with a .324 average in 35 games for the Gigantes. He also posted two home runs and 21 RBIs along with a .379 on-base percentage. This should not come as a surprise to Brewers fans after Segura batted .343 with seven RBIs in the month of September.

Many wondered if the 22-year-old was ready for the majors after struggling at the plate for the first few weeks after being called up to the big leagues. Segura batted .209 with seven RBIs and 10 strikeouts over that span. However, he turned on the afterburners and gave the organization confidence they made the right decision to trade Zack Greinke for him and two other prospects.

Segura also has good speed, which is something Milwaukee looks for in their players. He recorded seven stolen bases in eight attempts this past season and tied for second in the Dominican Winter League with 11 steals.

The right-handed batter will look to bring his recent success with him into the 2013 MLB season. The Brewers have given Segura the starting job at shortstop because they believe he will not only be good defensively but will become a threat at the plate. It will certainly be exciting to watch him improve offensively, especially since great sluggers such as Ryan Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart will be around him constantly to help him grow.
