20 MLB Players That Are Under Pressure

David Banks-US Presswire

In sports at any level there will always be pressure. Pressure can make or break a player. Some players thrive under pressure, others hate it. In professional sports pressure can come many facets it can come from repeat performances, living up to contracts, moving into a new role, or just improving.

In the MLB it is no different than any other sport. A perfect example of a player playing under pressure in 2012 was Adam Dunn. After Dunn was signed by the Chicago White Sox there was a lot of pressure on him to perform. The White Sox expected Dunn to be their power hitter.

Instead he regressed to historic levels. In 2011 he hit .159 and only hit 11 home runs. Even utility player Brent Lillibridge had more home runs then Dunn. Dunn’s on base percentage was just as low at .292. All of his numbers were terrible.

The pressure on Dunn to perform in 2012 was huge. If he didn’t perform well not only would he most likely be finished playing baseball but the White Sox as an organization would look foolish for signing him. Dunn needed to show the White Sox, the fans, and himself that 2011 was an aberration.

Dunn proved to the White Sox and their fans that 2011 was a year to forget. While his batting average was low at .204 and he struck out 222 times he still turned the corner. He was named an All-Star. Dunn also hit 41 home runs and drove in 96 runs. He was the league leader in walks at 105 and had an on base percentage of .333.

I wanted to take a look at the 20 players that I feel will have the most pressure on them in 2013.

What do you think of the list? I may have left some names off. Leave a comment and follow me on Twitter @EvanCrum1319

Josh Hamilton

Gary A. Vasquez-US Presswire

Hamilton signed a five year $125 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In an instant the pressure is now on Hamilton to perform for himself and for the Angels organization. Hamilton needs to show that he was worth $125 million.

Zack Greinke

Kirby Lee-US Presswire

Greinke signed a six year $147 million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The pressure is on him to perform and justify and live up to that contract.

4 of 21

BJ Upton

Daniel Shirey-US Presswire

Upton signed a five year $75.5 million dollar deal with the Atlanta Braves. The pressure is now on him to perform for the Braves like he did for the Tampa Bay Rays.

5 of 21

Mike Trout

Tom Szczerbowski-US Presswire

Trout is going to be under pressure to repeat his wonderful season that he had in 2012 and to not go into a sophomore slump that has hit other rookies their second year in the MLB.

6 of 21

Bryce Harper

Howard Smith-US Presswire

Harper just like Trout is under pressure to not enter a sophomore slump.

7 of 21

Kyuji Fujikawa

Robert Benson-US Presswire

The pressure is on Fujikawa because of what he could mean for the Chicago Cubs. Theo Epstein already said after signing Fujikawa that he wants him to be “part of the solution.” The Cubs signed him to a two year $9 million dollar deal.

8 of 21

Mariano Rivera

Debby Wong-US Presswire

Rivera is under pressure to perform well in what is most likely his last year playing baseball. Does the all-time leader in saves still have one more year left?

9 of 21

Joel Hanarahan

Charles LeClaire-US Presswire

Hanrahan is under pressure because of the trade that sent him to the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox gave up some pretty good prospects to get Hanrahan. He has already been named the closer for the Red Sox adding even more pressure. Oh, and let’s not forget that he is playing in Boston where there is always pressure to perform. Have fun in 2013.

10 of 21

Fernando Rodney

Kim Klement-US Presswire

Rodney was named the 2012 AL Comeback Player Of The Year. He posted an incredible 0.60 ERA for the Rays. What is the pressure on him? He needs to repeat that performance for the Rays and not perform badly in 2013.

11 of 21

Alex Anthopoulos

Matthew Emmons-US Presswire

I know that Anthopolous isn’t a player but let me explain why I put him on this list. With the trades that he made he helped make the Toronto Blue Jays an instant front runner for not only winning the AL East but for the World Series. There is a lot of pressure on Anthopolous that with the players that he traded for too perform for the Blue Jays. He has put himself in this position so we shall see if the Blue Jays live up to expectations.

12 of 21

RA Dickey

Anthony Gruppuso-US Presswire

Dickey won the Cy Young for the NL in 2012 with a 2.73 ERA. Now he is north of the border via a trade and there is pressure on him to perform at the level he performed at in 2012 for the Blue Jays.

13 of 21

Michael Young

Christopher Hanewinckel-US Presswire

Young has never had the pressure that is now thrust upon him since he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. It’s a different market and Philadelphia fans are notorious for bringing pressure on anyone that plays for any of their teams, especially their beloved Phillies.

14 of 21

Cody Ross

Mark L. Baer

Ross signed a three year $26 million dollar deal with a club option in 2016 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The pressure is on Ross to live up to that deal especially since the Diamondbacks already have a stacked outfield and didn’t need to go out and sign him.

15 of 21

Dan Haren

Kirby Lee-US Presswire

Haren signed a one year $13 million dollar deal with the Washington Nationals. Experts are now calling the Nationals and their starting rotation the best in the MLB. Haren is under pressure along with the rest of the rotation to live up to that billing.

16 of 21

Adam Dunn

Joy R. Absalon-US Presswire

Dunn still has the pressure on him from 2011 even though he shed some of that in 2012. There are still plenty of White Sox fans and members of the Chicago media that are wondering if he will regress to how he played in 2011. If Dunn can have two seasons without going back to where he was in 2011 he won’t be on this list anymore.

17 of 21

Alex Rios

Rob Grabowski-US Presswire

Rios is under pressure because of the year he had with the White Sox in 2013. There is a lot of pressure on him to perform at a consistent basis which he hasn’t done.

18 of 21

Nick Swisher

Rick Osentoski-US Presswire

Swisher signed a four year $56 million dollar contract with the Cleveland Indians. The contract is actually worth $70 million dollars due to a fifth year vesting option. The pressure is on for Swisher to justify the Indians spending that much money on Swisher. A move that left many scratching their heads with the amount of money they spent on him.

19 of 21

Aroldis Chapman

Frank Victores-US Presswire

Chapman performed great in 2012 for the Cincinnati Reds. He posted a 1.51 ERA. The Reds decided to move Chapman into their rotation in 2013. With this move there will be pressure on Chapman to perform.

20 of 21

AJ Burnett

Frank Victores-US Presswire

Burnett had a comeback year for the Pittsburgh Pirates. For the Pirates he went 16-10 and posted a 3.51 ERA. He started to show signs of the old Burnett. He will be under pressure to repeat that performance in 2013.

21 of 21

Ryan Ludwick

Frank Victores-US Presswire

The Reds resigned Ludwick to a two year $15 million deal that that includes a mutual option for 2015. Ludwick will be under pressure to show that the Reds did the right thing by resigning him.
