MLB Rumors: David Price Close To Signing 1 Year Deal?

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

David Price is close to signing a 1 year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. This deal would take place of his arbitration year and wouldn’t let him hit free agency until the end of 2015, when he’s 30 years old. This would be a wise move by the Rays because the deal is likely to be (roughly) “only” 11 million for next year. The guy is coming off a Cy Young season, is left handed, is only 27 years old, and won it in arguably the best division in all of baseball. If Zack Greinke got the money he got, David Price could be worth around 28 million a year annually.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Rays can lock Price up long term. I’m not sure they’ll be able too, but they do have some revenues coming in from a new TV deal, which they might use just to finance a new major deal with Price. This is a strong organization that relies so much on player development, it’s hard to see them throwing 170 million at just one guy. They’d be advised to do it, but at the same time- they could get a king’s ransom if they traded him this year.

David Price means a ton to this team and organization. I’m happy the Rays were able to get a good deal this year, but they could be setting themselves up for a major problem if Price is giving them the hometown discount now, and could want the Rays to take care of him down the road.
