MLB Rumors: Could Chase Headley Be Traded For Justin Upton?

The 2013 Major League Baseball season is just over two months away and there are still rumors flying around including one that the San Diego Padres may be considering trading Chase Headley to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Justin Upton. I’m not so sure that this would be the best move for either one of the teams but has the potential to change the fortunes of both quickly. Headley going to Arizona would put another young bat into the Diamondbacks lineup while the Padres would get a star outfielder who could easily hit 35-40 home runs for San Diego.

Headley is a star in the making after a breakout 2012 season and if he was plugged into the Arizona lineup, Headley could become an even bigger star. Headley also has the potential of hitting 25-30 home runs a season as well and wouldn’t be the headache that Upton is becoming for Arizona. I would be shocked if this trade actually happened but it is a trade that has caused a ton of buzz.

Upton is going to get traded before the 2013 season gets started I think and while Headley would be a fine return for Arizona to get, Headley is just too valuable in San Diego right now. It may continue to be an uphill climb for the Padres in the National League West as they fight to stay out of the cellar in the division but Headley is a building block and not someone that the team should trade. If the Padres can sign some players around Headley, maybe San Diego can surprise people in the years to come.
