Who will be the Kansas City Royals’ best hitter in 2013?
Last year there was no doubt the Billy Butler was the best batsman on the Kansas City Royals. He hit .313 with 107 RBIs and 29 home runs in 2012, all of those the best on the team. And there is no reason to suspect that he will not put up another excellent season next year, but it is interesting to try to speculate who might be the best hitter for the Royals in 2013.
As alluded to, Butler must be a prime candidate to be the best hitter on the Royals again. He is in the prime of his career and has been showing signs of putting up numbers like this for some time. Then there is also Alex Gordon who has had two excellent seasons with the bat (and glove, for good measure) and looks to be the every day number three hitter next year. But the player on whom I would actually have my money is the catcher Salvador Perex.
There is the danger of a sophomore slump like the one that hit Eric Hosmer last year as Perez goes into his first full season, but he showed an incredible talent in the time he was with the big league club last season. I think he still flies enough under the radar that teams will pitch to him instead of Gordon of Butler and he will be well placed to cash in next season.
There are some dark horses as well. Mike Moustakas was very good in 2012, but he was perhaps not as consistent as he would like. If he can get that sorted he definitely has the ability to be a formidable hitter next year. If Hosmer can bounce back well from his slump in 2012 he is one to watch as well. He is certainly better than he showed last year.
