New York Mets Set To Unveil Sidd Finch in Minor League Game

Charles LeClaire-USA Today Sports

It almost seems as if the past 25 years as a New York Mets fan has been nothing more than a Manti Te’o story, culminating in the death of the MLB club in 2012.  The pranks and hoaxes the Mets organization plays on its fans have been numerous, painful, and in some cases, downright cruel.  Now the Mets want to capitalize on this Te’o hoax at a Brooklyn Cyclones game on June 21st.

As a quick recap, Te’o is a Notre Dame linebacker who was involved in a four year relationship of various sorts with a young lady that never was.  Following me, yet?  He met her, didn’t meet her, his father spent time with her, then he didn’t.  She then was involved in a car accident, when doctors found cancer in her, and died of said cancer a short while later.  Sounds sort of like a joke the Mets would play on their fans, right?

Well, Te’o's fictitious girlfriend never lived, and never died, and although the jury is still out on this one, the Mets are finally ready to unveil a hoax of their own from their very past.  Remember in 1985 when Sports Illustrated came out with a story of a pitcher named Sidd Finch that was a yogic master and could control his body to throw 168MPH strikes?

Many of you might not recall, but it was a hoax that had Mets fans believing once again.  In light of this Te’o story, the Cyclones are having a “Fictitious Friday” on June 21st to celebrate the Manti Te’o fake girlfriend hoax.  They will be featuring a unicorn, a minotaur and  mermaid in a petting zoo, and their press release included that they were still trying to get the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot to throw out the first pitch.

In a sports world where everything may not always be as it seems, maybe Finch will join the club after a long stint in the Tibetan mountains where he also trained his body to not age, but that is most likely not going to happen.  The only thing that Mets fans are truly hoping for, is the fact that 2013 will only be a hoax, and they will finally wake up from this bad dream we have been having for so many years.
