What Should the St. Louis Cardinals Expect From Ty Wigginton This Season?

After falling just short of a World Series appearance for a second-straight season in 2012, the St. Louis Cardinals will be seen as strong contenders once again this year as they look for their second championship over the last three seasons. This team certainly has the talent to make another run once again, but one player could come up big if given the opportunity–Ty Wigginton.

The Cardinals signed Wigginton to a two-year deal back in December and with the type of progress he had last season with the Philadelphia Phillies–there’s no reason why he can’t be a contributing factor for St. Louis this year. Wigginton may not be the type of player that will be in the everyday lineup, but just like he did with the Phillies last year–there’s no reason why Wigginton can’t be a key factor from time to time off the bench.

Nobody gave the Cardinals much of a shot last year considering Albert Pujols–who signed with the Los Angeles Angels–left the team and many expected them to go through a rebuilding  year. Instead, they earned one of the two Wild Card spots and were even on the verge of another World Series appearance before letting the San Francisco Giants overcome a 3-1 deficit in the NLCS.

As mentioned before, he may not put up the most dominant numbers on a consistent basis, but Wigginton certainly makes a nice addition for the Cardinals as they look to be strong contenders once again in the National League heading into the 2013 season.
