The deal is finally done. The Atlanta Braves have acquired Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks via a trade that is a welcome shift in Braves tendencies over the years. Usually the Braves would make do with what they had and wait for the season to see what happens. Generally the team would build around pitching and hope to get the most out of what they have already in place in the outfield.
That isn’t the case this year and the fact that the player acquired is the brother of the free agency acquisition B.J. Upton is likely a large reason. The fact of the matter is, no matter what the reasoning for this trade, pending physicals and official announcements, the Braves now have three top tier outfielders that have the rare combination of speed and power. Strikeouts could be a concern for the team that suddenly looks like a World Series contender, so that will be something to watch.
The Braves need Dan Uggla to rebound from his slump, Brian McCann to return fully healthy for the last year of his contract and the Upton brothers to drive one another to the best year of each of their lives. If they get those things, plus the assumed unofficial adoption of Jason Heyward into the Upton family, this batting order looks fierce! I wouldn’t want to face them in April or in October. Braves fans will enjoy seeing them all year long.
