I never thought I would see the day where Pedro Martinez reappeared in the Boston Red Sox organization. That day came this week when Martinez was named a special assistant to the team. I’m in complete shock over that but shouldn’t be too surprised considering the success that Martinez had in Boston.
Martinez will have the chance to mentor some pitchers and help the organization with other decisions. That sounds about perfect for Martinez though and hopefully he can get the Red Sox back to being a competitive team again in 2013. Martinez was one of the most dominating pitchers in his time in Boston and was nearly unhittable most of the time. If Martinez can just impart some of that knowledge on the young pitchers that the Red Sox have coming through their system, it will be a very fruitful relationship. I’m curious though if bringing Martinez back coming be the sign of something else to come.
There is a part of me that believes that Martinez could find himself back on the field at some point as the team’s pitching coach. I don’t know how interested Martinez would be in that job but it sounds like a perfect job for him. He would be back in the game on a full-time basis and wouldn’t be trying to throw 120 pitches every five days. I get the feeling Martinez will get the itch to want to do more someday. Right now though, the Red Sox are better off having Martinez back in the fold.
