With the success that the Oakland Athletics have enjoyed off and on in the past several years, most fans will expect them to compete for the AL West and a Wildcard again this year. That certainly is a huge possibility. It won’t be easy, but it’s possible. The trade they completed with the Houston Astros recently was a good one in the interest of going after more success in the tough division.
Jed Lowrie is one of those guys that you love to have on your team. I’m sure you’re heard of him but in case you haven’t and are looking for a similar player to compare him to talent and ability wise, think of Martin Prado. He can provide that kind of spark, and give that kind of effort for a team. The A’s needed to shore up second and third base spots, and Lowrie is a great grab to get that need taken care of. They can plug him in at either spot and get a good result and a hundred percent effort.
The other members of the trade also saw the A’s come out looking good. They gave up young first baseman Chris Carter, highly-regarded pitching prospect Brad Peacock and catching prospect Max Stassi. In return they got the switch hitting Lowrie, and right-handed reliever, Fernando Rodriguez. Rodriguez figures to help the bullpen depth, and Lowrie could be invaluable through the tough summer fight the A’s face in the AL West. All in all, it’s a great deal for the A’s.
