Little in the sports world is more exciting than watching a young player get called up to Major League Baseball and wow the entire baseball world. The Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado did just that in 2012. His offensive numbers aren’t outstanding at this point, but his play at third most certainly is. From the day he was called up, Machado began to show the people around him that he was something special.
The Orioles are blessed with enough offensive pop that they do not have to stress about Machado coming along at a normal rate of growth offensively. It’s likely that the more major league pitching he sees and the more at-bats he gets in him, the more he will hit. Even if he never hits for huge numbers from the offensive side of the ball, his impact will be substantial whenever he is on the field.
Whether timely smart hitting or incredible defensive plays, Machado should be a staple of consistency when he is in there. He was effectively shut down in the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees, and they came up short in that series – barely. If he had been able to get his normal impact offensively, there is a good chance they win that series. In other words, what Machado does this year and in the future will probably become increasingly important to whether the Orioles win easily or struggle to get by.
