The San Diego Padres had some good things last season, the most popular of which was the play of third baseman Chase Hadley. For all he did well last season, Hadley doesn’t pitch and that is an area where the Padres need vast improvement. What is their answer for this situation? As of right now, the Padres officially have two pitchers who have earned starting spots: Clayton Richard and Edinson Volquez. There are 10 starting pitchers in camp. In other words, they are holding starter tryouts.

Some frontrunners might be the few with a lot of major league experience. Jason Marquis is in that group as well as Freddy Garcia, who is a non-roster invitee this Spring. Marquis figures to have a good chance at a spot after a decent time in San Diego last season. From there it turns into a crap shoot. They have pitchers coming off injuries from last season. They even a few pitchers coming as non-roster invitees that are coming off of injuries.

While there is a little bit of everything as far as pitchers go for the Padres, there is some good in this. The good thing about this atmosphere is manager Bud Black and his crew will get a chance to look at many arms that could fill those last two or three spots. Some young guys could jump in the mix and fill a spot. It is a very unique situation that will be fascinating to watch all spring.
