The Minnesota Twins knew going into this season that there would be a few more jobs up for grabs during Spring Training. One set of positions that are as of yet undecided are the middle infield tandem at shortstop and second base. The group vying for playing time is Jamey Carroll, Brian Dozier, Pedro Florimon and Eduardo Escobar. Here is my take.
Last season Brian Dozier saw a lot of time at shortstop. This spring he will see a lot of time at second while Florimon will get a lot of time at shortstop. While that is going on, Escobar and Carroll will see time at each position as well as some time at third. Third base isn’t up for grabs however, only second and shortstop. For now there really are no favorites. That is quite an exciting way for a team to go about Spring Training.
My opinion is that Dozier will find time at second probably while either Escobar or Florimon will take the starting job at shortstop. One thing is for certain with this kind of system. These guys are going to be playing their hearts out during the spring trying to earn these spots. No matter who winds up with the spot, they will know that they earned it the hard way and play harder during the season to keep it. I think this is the perfect way to approach settling these positions during the spring.
