Chicago Cubs prospect Trevor Gretzky is poised to become “The Next One” destined for greatness wearing spikes not skates.

Trevor is the son of Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky however this Gretzky has his sights set on Wrigley Field and the bleacher bums. The Cubs selected Trevor Gretzky in the 7th round, 219th overall in the 2011 amateur baseball draft out of Oaks Christian High School.

Gretzky had signed a letter of intent with San Diego State University to play under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn however changed gears opting for professional baseball after the draft.

Gretzky spent last season with the Arizona League Cubs proving critics he wasn’t a publicity stunt finishing the season with a respectable stat line for the Cubs.

In his first taste of professional baseball Gretzky batted .304, .703 OPS with 35 hits and four stolen bases in 35 games. Gretzky held his own alongside Cubs blue chip prospects Jorge Soler, Shawon Dunston Jr and Daniel Vogelbach.

The lanky 20 year old shared time between first base and left field under the watchful eye of Manager Bobby Mitchell where he posted a .971 fielding percentage.

Whether Gretzky begins the 2013 season in Arizona or garners a promotion to the Peoria Chiefs there is no question success is soon to follow.

Cubs fans should rejoice as they may have royalty in the king’s son patrolling the ivy walls sooner than later…….. And if on the off chance he doesn’t make it we’ll always have Paulina.
