The San Diego Padres enter their first week of spring games with a second baseman job still up for grabs. The two candidates are Jedd Gyorko and Logan Forsythe. From what has been whispered about Gyorko, he might bring something to the competition that greatly increases his chances of coming out on top. He has a great bat! I mean he is a hitting machine!
During his first spring at-bat this year, all he did was hit a grand slam. He didn’t just hit the ball though, he laced that bad boy over the wall in left. There was little doubt from the point of contact where the ball was going to end up. That could be a good sign for him and a not so good sign for Forsythe. Honestly, unless something happens to Gyorko’s bat from now until the end of the spring season, I cannot imagine he could lose this job.
Someone said that if he hits they will have no choice but to put him in there. If? If he hits? He has never not hit. Looking at his numbers, he really is a great hitter no matter where he is playing. What about his fielding? The numbers look good there as well and maybe even better than Forsythe. This swing was sweet and powerful. There will be many more home runs in and out of spring venues and Gyorko is going to win this job in a landslide.
