Stephen Strasburg Should Be Fine Despite Spotty Debut This Spring

This just in, Stephen Strasburg gave up runs during a Spring Training game! Somebody call a doctor and someone else stop the press. This guy isn’t supposed to give up runs at all is he? Isn’t that why he was shut down in the middle of the second half of the season last year? So he would be fresh and perfect this year and forever after that? Okay, I’m laying it on a little thick. I do think that the expectations on this kid are a little bit ridiculous, however. Even with huge expectations, he nor his managers and coaches are concerned in the least.

Should they be? His fast ball was hammered almost every time he threw it. Some guys struck out, of course, but when contact was made, it was a crack of the bat that could be heard two counties away. So should they be worried? Nah! It’s very early on and his arm isn’t near ready for full strength nine inning games. With all that is riding on his arm, he probably should take it kind of easy while making sure he gets his work in.

As for the team that expects to win around him, the Washington Nationals think they really should be exempt from having to go through the season. They are going to either win the World Series or consider their season a bust. That is ridiculous, of course, when they might not even win their own division with two very much improved teams barking at their heels. I wonder how ridiculous the expectations are going to be for Strasburg. He has great stuff and he is going to win games but don’t put the weight of the entire team on this young man. He is actually human, after all
