It wasn’t long ago that Victor Martinez was the everyday catcher for the Detroit Tigers. After a season that was missed because of a bad knee, Martinez now will have to play a brand new role on the Tigers squad if he plans to make an impact. That role is the designated hitter position which he now will firmly stay planted in for the Tigers. Can he make the transition?

I’m not certain but I would guess that he has everything it takes to make the position change and get himself slamming balls left and right out of every American League park there is. This is a man who could lose several points off of his average and still hit over three hundred. He will be throwing out twenty-five to thirty something homers as well. It is a different role for Martinez but certainly one he can handle well.

Why is he right for the spot? He is prepared. He accepts that he is not the catcher anymore. His knees thank him and his body thanks him. Now he will have to transition from running the game behind the plate to sitting on the bench between seasons. Some guys stay loose on a stationary bike during time like that. Whatever he has to do to make himself successful at the DH spot is exactly what he will do. That is what a professional does and that is why he will succeed in the DH spot in all likelihood.
