Chicago Cubs Would be Stupid to Leave WGN

As if fans haven’t been critical enough of the Ricketts family that now owns the Chicago Cubs, it is going to get even worse. According to reports, the family plans to not renew their contract with WGN-TV after the 2014 season comes to a close.

So just to set the record straight, not only do they want to add more night games, jack up ticket prices, plaster signs all over Wrigleyville and not go after any free agents that would help the team become a contender, but now they want to yank away national coverage in favor for the more lucrative local television money to increase their “bottom line”.

To be honest, I already disliked the family as baseball owners before this year, but now that’s quickly starting to turn into searing hatred. Don’t purchase a team beloved by millions across the nation and promise to uphold the franchise’s tradition while trying to build a winner and do the exact opposite.

Granted, I was one of the people that was hoping for Mark Cuban to buy the Cubs and he may have been doing some of the same things for the sake of a few extra bucks, but you better believe he would have tried much harder to get proven players with star power in the lineup and build a consistent contender.

I worry about the direction this franchise is headed. They’re quickly turning from the “Lovable Losers” to the “Dollar Bill Doormats” and it makes me a bit sick. The damage that the Ricketts family is doing to the Cubs is almost criminal, and this is a team that hasn’t won a World Series since 1908. That’s how bad it’s gotten.
